particularities Radar station

Njunis is a 1717  moh. high mountain in Målselv municipality in Troms og Finnmark county in northern Norway . There is a radar station on its summit. The name of the mountain comes from the Sami languages and means (mountain) nose .

For the mountain, in addition to 1717  m, there are also several divergent altitude indications such as 1713  m or 1721  m .

The massif lies between the Sanddalen in the north and the Anjavassdalen in the south, two side valleys of the Dividalen in the east. The highest mountain in the area is also characterized by the highest tree line , which in Anjavassdalen reaches up to 700 m. There are two glaciers to the west and east of the summit . The mountain is on the northern border of the Øvre Dividal National Park . In the central and upper regions of the mountain is primarily of gabbro and amphibolite constructed, but are at the edges up to a height of 1,500  m and digestions of limestone to be found.

On the summit of the Njunis, NATO installed a silo-mounted retractable radar system with a range of 450 km. The plant, the planning of which had already started in the 1980s, comprises a four-storey plant inside the mountain and its own power plant. It is connected to Frihetsli im Dividalen via a 9.5 km long tunnel . The radar is part of a whole chain of similar systems along the Norwegian coast, which is mainly used to monitor the Russian border.
