Målselv ( Sami Málatvuomi ) is a municipality in Northern Norway in the province ( Fylke ) Troms og Finnmark . It is one of the most important bases of the Norwegian armed forces .
The municipality includes the area around the Malangsfjord and its hinterland up to the Swedish border with the fertile mountain valley of the eponymous river Målselva .
Målselv was founded by settlers from southern Norway. The place Østerdalen was founded by them in 1796.
The administrative center is the village of Moen. In the south of the municipality is the area Bardufoss ; there are the towns of Andselv and Heggelia and Bardufoss Airport , locations of Norwegian army and air force units . Until its dissolution in 2009, Heggelia was the headquarters of the 6th Army Division . Andsvatnet lake west of Bardufoss provides drinking water for most of the community, including the Army and Air Force garrisons in Bardufoss.
The place Olsborg is the editorial office of the local newspaper Nye Troms , whose circulation area also includes the municipalities of Bardu and Balsfjord .
In the hinterland are the places Rundhaug, Øverbygd, Skjold and Holt. Skjold is also an army base ; an infantry unit is based here. The Øvre Dividalen National Park (740 km²) lies on the Swedish border .
