Salangen is a municipality in Northern Norway in the province ( Fylke ) Troms og Finnmark . The municipality has 2146 inhabitants (as of February 27, 2020), the administrative headquarters are in Sjøvegan .

geography

Salangen is located in the south of the northern Norwegian province of Troms og Finnmark. Until the end of 2019 it belonged to the Troms district , which became part of Troms og Finnmark on January 1, 2020 as part of the regional reform . The municipality is located on the coast of the Salangen fjord of the same name .

The Salangselva River flows through the municipality . The highest elevation is the Hjerttinden (Sami: Basečohkka ) with 1381  moh. on the border with the neighboring municipality of Sørreisa . The only Tettsted in the municipality is Sjøvegan , which also serves as the administrative center. The Fylkesvei 851 and the Fylkesvei 84 connect Salangen to the European route 6 (E6).

history

The Salangen municipality was founded in 1871 when it was spun off from Ibestad . In 1964 Lavangen became part of the municipality and in 1977 the area became independent again. The population was declining for a long time, from 1946 to 2018 it fell by 23 percent. From around 2000, however, the number stabilized and finally increased again slightly.

economy

The most important sources of income for the municipality include service providers and public administration. In 2019, 735 out of 1005 people worked in Salangen itself, followed by Bardu (46 people) and Tromsø (42).

Surname

Like many other municipalities in the province of Troms og Finnmark, Salangen has neither Nynorsk nor Bokmål as an official language, but is neutral on this issue. The inhabitants of the municipality are called Salangsværing . In 1567 the place was mentioned as "Sellanger". The name of the municipality is made up of “sel” (German: seal) and “angr” (bay, fjord).
