Ibestad is a municipality in the Norwegian Fylke Troms og Finnmark . The municipality has 1,361 inhabitants (as of February 27, 2020). The administrative seat is in Hamnvik .

geography

The municipality consists of the two inhabited, mountainous and rugged islands Rolla and Andørja , which have been connected to each other by the 3.4 km long Ibestadtunnel since 2000 . The tunnel runs from Hamnvik on Rolla Island to Sørvika on the southern tip of Andørja. In the northeast of Andørja the municipality is connected to the mainland by the Mjøsundbrua . Furthermore, some smaller and uninhabited islands belong to the area of the municipality.

On the more southerly island of Rolla there are two lakes, Skipsvatnet and Sandvatnet, which are stretched parallel to each other in a north-south direction between the two elevations Lesselitinden and Drangen. The island of Andørja surrounds the Straumbotn fjord arm , and several elevations extend around the bay. The highest point in the entire municipality is the Langlidtinden in the northeast of Andørja with a height of 1275.9  moh.

The inhabitants are concentrated on the coastal area of the two islands, the population has been declining for decades. The inhabitants of the municipality are called Ibestadværing . As in many municipalities in Troms og Finnmark , the official written language is Bokmål , i.e. the more widespread of the two Norwegian language forms.

history

Ibestad commune was founded in 1837, but at that time it comprised much larger areas and reached as far as the Swedish border. Today the region is divided into the municipalities of Ibestad, Gratangen , Lavangen , Salangen , Bardu and Tjeldsund . In the meantime, the municipality consisted only of a part of the island of Rolla, but in 1964 the remaining part and the island of Andørja were again incorporated into Ibestad.

Until December 31, 2019, Ibestad belonged to the then province of Troms . As part of the regional reform in Norway, this was transferred to the newly created province of Troms og Finnmark on January 1, 2020.

economy
