Loppa ( Sami : Láhppi , Kven : Lappea ) is a municipality in the Norwegian province ( Fylke ) Troms og Finnmark . With 888 inhabitants (as of February 27, 2020) Loppa is one of the least populated municipalities in Norway.
geography
The municipality borders on Kvænangen to the south and Alta to the east . To the north lies the Atlantic Ocean and the island of Sørøya, which belongs to Hasvik municipality . The coastline is rugged and characterized by fjords and islands. The area is mountainous. On the border to the neighboring municipality of Kvænangen lies the Øksfjordjøkelen glacier (Sami: Ákšovuonjiehkki ), which with 1191 moh. represents the highest elevation in the municipality.
Today the administrative center is not the eponymous island of Loppa, but the place Øksfjord on the fjord of the same name , whose port is called daily by the ships of the Hurtigruten . Smaller scattered coastal settlements are Sandland, Bergsfjord and Nuvsvåg, which can only be reached by sea. From Øksfjord the Riksvei 882 leads south to European route 6 .
As in many municipalities in Troms og Finnmark , the official written language is Bokmål , i.e. the more widespread of the two Norwegian language forms. The inhabitants of the municipality are called Loppværing .
history
Traces of Norwegian colonization of the area during the Viking Age have been found on the island of Loppa .
The population grew until around 1960, and has since declined. In the decade between 2001 and 2011, the population shrank by 24.1 percent.
Until the state- wide regional reform , the municipality belonged to what was then the province of Finnmark , which became part of the newly created province of Troms og Finnmark on January 1, 2020 .
economy
The economy is shaped by fishing and fish processing. However, the importance of the industry has declined since the 1960s. From 2009 to 2014 the number of registered fishing boats fell from 65 to 48.
coat of arms
The coat of arms shows a black cormorant on a gold background. The coat of arms has been officially in use since 1980.
