Nesseby ( Sami Unjárga , Finnish Uuniemi ) is a municipality in the Norwegian province ( Fylke ) Troms og Finnmark .

The municipality is located on the isthmus between the Varangerfjord and the Tana River (Sami Deatnu , Finnish Tenojoki ). It borders Finland in the south .

Most of the inhabitants are spread over small settlements along the coast of the fjord. The administrative seat is in Varangerbotn. Most of the inhabitants belong to the Sami people . The variant of their language spoken in Nesseby is a dialect of its own.

Since herds of reindeer roamed the isthmus regularly since the end of the Ice Age, the area attracted hunters from an early age, as numerous archaeological finds testify.
