The cranberries are a species group in the genus of blueberries ( Vaccinium ). They are mostly treated as a subgenus , but sometimes also separated as a separate genus Oxycoccus . The berry fruits of their representatives are edible and have a sweet and sour, sometimes slightly bland taste. The cranberries are found in temperate regions (e.g. also in Germany) in the forest, in the moor and on the heather .

Regionally, for example in the Salzburg Pinzgau or in Tyrol , the usual blueberries are called cranberries .
