Lavangen ( North Sami Loabák ) is a municipality in northern Norway in the province ( Fylke ) Troms og Finnmark . The municipality has 1034 inhabitants (as of February 27, 2020). The administrative seat is in Tennevoll .
geography
The municipality of Lavangen comprises the area around the Lavangen fjord of the same name and the Spansdalen mountain valley. On the coast the area is flat, to the north and south of it there are large elevations and several valleys. The highest elevation is the Ruŋgugáisá (Norwegian: Spanstinden) with 1457.2 moh. The Spansdalelva flows through the Spansdalen and flows into the sea at Tennevoll.
The European route 6 (E6) runs through the area of the municipality , which is connected to Tennevoll via Fylkesvei 84.
history
The commune was founded in 1907 when it was spun off from Ibestad . In 1964 Lavangen was merged with Salangen , and in 1977 it became an independent municipality again.
population
The area is shaped by Sami and many Sami live in the commune . From 1946 to 2011, the population decreased by 45 percent per 1003 inhabitants.
Like many other municipalities in the province of Troms og Finnmark, Lavangen has neither Nynorsk nor Bokmål as an official language, but is neutral on this issue. The inhabitants of the municipality are called Lavangsværing . Lavangen is also one of the communities in which a Sami language is one of the official languages.
economy
Agriculture is characterized by sheep and cattle farming . The wood and furniture industries are particularly important in industrial production. In 2019, 260 of 427 people worked in Lavangen itself, followed by the municipalities of Salangen (51 people) and Tromsø (20).
