North Norge
Nord-Norge ( dt. Northern Norway ) is the northernmost part of Norway , located on the European North Sea and the Barents Sea . With 112,973 km² it makes up around 35 percent of the mainland, but with 484,546 inhabitants (2017) it only makes up nine percent of the population.
Nord-Norge is made up of the two provinces ( Fylke ) Nordland and Troms og Finnmark . The Nordnorsk råd cooperation committee is there to facilitate agreements between the two of them and to represent common interests . The largest cities are (from south to north): Mosjøen , Mo i Rana , Bodø , Narvik , Harstad , Tromsø , Alta and Hammerfest .
The Svartisen Glacier, the Lofoten and Vesterålen archipelagos are located in North Norge . With the Nordkinn peninsula , the northern end of mainland Europe can be found in North-Norge. The region is also known for its midnight sun and the northern lights .
Northern Norway belongs to the Sami settlement area . The Sametinget Parliament of Norway is in session in Karasjok .
