Mosjøen ( South Sami : Mussere ) is a city and also a former municipality and staple town in Norway . It is located between two mountains at the end of a valley area on the Vefsna River , immediately before its confluence with the Vefsnfjord . The administrative seat of the municipality of Vefsn is located in the city . With 9,854 inhabitants (2019), Mosjøen is one of the largest cities in Nordland Province .

Along with Mo i Rana and Narvik , Mosjøen is one of Nordland's industrial centers. One of the largest aluminum smelters in Europe is located in the city . In addition, trade, craft, finance, transportation and tourism make up a diverse economic life.

The city is a regional communication center and can be easily reached by train, via Mosjøen Airport and via its connection to European route 6 . The port, which consists of both public and private quays, is one of the largest in Northern Norway .

The city is a magnet for tourists, as there are several cultural meeting points there, especially Sjøgata ("Lake Street"), which is lined by one of the longest rows of old wooden houses in Europe. With its 100 wooden houses, this house ensemble, which was built around 1866, is one of the sights of Northern Norway.
