The European Route 6 ( E6 ) is connected to more than 3000 kilometers, the longest continuous road link in Scandinavia. It begins in Sweden on the Baltic Sea - ferry from Trelleborg , through West Sweden and almost all of Norway , and ends near the Norwegian border to Russia in Kirkenes on the Barents Sea . About the southern quarter of the route is developed as a motorway or similar to a motorway.

history

The E6 originally ran from Rome via Florence and Trelleborg to Trondheim . When a major change in the European road system was decided in 1984, the section in Scandinavia was not renamed European road 47 . The expansion to the motorway between the greater Malmö and Oslo area was completed in 2015.

course

Since 2019, the E6 between Vellinge (near Trelleborg ) and Hamar on the east bank of Mjøsa (Norway's largest lake) has been continuously expanded into a motorway with two separate lanes each (10 km of which is a motorway-like road in Oslo). From Hamar to Tretten near Øyer (north of Lillehammer ), traffic is also free of intersections, but mainly in one lane. There are only three lanes on some inclines, two for going uphill and one for going downhill. The motorway or motorway-like expansion extends over 803 km.

Until then, the E6 will lead over several special structures such as the 1.7 kilometer long cable-stayed bridge at Uddevalla over the Sunningesund, the Svinesund bridge on the border between Sweden and Norway, the 1.4 kilometer long Mjøsa bridge at Moelv or the 1, opened in 2018 5 kilometer long suspension bridge Hålogalandbrücke .

From Tretten to its end point in Kirkenes, the road is a normal country road, it also has very narrow, winding and mountainous sections and numerous bridges and tunnels; In a few sections, however, the E6 is also developed like a motorway in central Norway without intersections, e.g. B. north of Ringebu and in the greater Trondheim area.

In the section between Lillehammer and Trondheim, the road crosses the mountainous landscape of the Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park . Further north it leads over several mountain crossings such as B. Saltfjellet (here it crosses the Arctic Circle ), Kråkmofjellet , Gratangsfjellet , Kvænangsfjellet , Sennalandet and Hatter , which are equipped with barriers / signal systems for temporary closures of these sections in winter due to weather conditions. There are several very long tunnels on the E6 in Norway. The longest tunnel on the E6 is the almost nine-kilometer-long Korgfjell tunnel near Mo i Rana , which was opened in 2005 and was built because the section of the E6 over the Korgfjellet was very often impassable in winter. A special feature is that the road in the northern part is interrupted by an approximately 8 km long ferry route across the Tysfjord (inlet) .

The entire route in Norway and Sweden is only marked with the road number E6.

particularities

In the winter months, several Norwegian sections of the E6 can only be crossed using the Kolonnekjøring in bad weather .

Many of the E6 tunnels are not passable for cyclists due to poor ventilation, so that detours (often by ferry) are necessary. However, z. For example, the almost nine-kilometer-long Korgfjell Tunnel is also open to cyclists and pedestrians.

The state of development of the E6 varies greatly, especially in the mountains it is often very narrow at the level of a district road.

Tolls are levied on the section of the E6 that is part of the Oslo city motorway . Likewise on several newly built sections and at some tunnels (toll stations).

Alternatively, the route from Trelleborg to Kirkenes can also be covered on European route 4 through Sweden and European route 75 through Finland; this variant is around 800 kilometers shorter than when using the E 6.

Projects / further expansion

Statens vegvesen is closely following the further expansion of the E6, numerous project planning, planning and construction measures are in progress.

In central Norway, the expansion, which has been completed from the Swedish border to Hamar, is to be extended as a four-lane motorway to Trondheim. The expansion from Hamar to Moelv will be completed in 2020, the expansion to the motorway between Moelv and Øyer is to begin in autumn 2020, and commissioning is planned for 2025. The further section through Gundbrandsdalen to Tretten has already been developed, the further extension to Otta is being planned, of which a section between Ringebu and Sjoa has already been built as a new motorway. At the same time, on the opposite side of the Dovrefjell from Trondheim to the south, an upgrade to a four-lane motorway is under construction, initially to Ulsberg (near Oppdal ). After these two major projects have been completed by around 2025, the only thing missing to close the gap is the expansion between Otta and Ulsberg (a total of 149 km) in order to connect the metropolitan regions of Oslo and Trondheim by motorway / intersection-free expressway. Further expansion measures are also planned in the greater Oslo area.

In Northern Norway, further sections of the route are to be made more weather-independent and traffic-safe, in order to further reduce the snow and ice-related blocking times of route sections at the mountain crossings in winter. In addition, bottlenecks are to be eliminated and local route reductions and thus shorter travel times are to be implemented, and narrow, winding sections or sections with steep inclines / declines are to be made flatter and straightened (also to enable a higher average driving speed - especially for goods transport ( truck ) - and better residents to protect against the traffic load). For this purpose, new / re-routes are planned, which often contain larger new bridges and long tunnels as solutions.

The following projects, for example, are in the planning or under construction:

Project E6 Oslo (Manglerud project):
In the area of the city of Oslo, it is planned to expand the existing route between Klemetsrud and Abildsø and to build a completely new route of the E6 between Abildsø in the south and Teisen in the north in order to improve the flow of traffic and reduce the burden on the To reduce residents and at the same time improve the traffic situation for bus traffic ( public transport ) and cyclists / pedestrians. As part of this project between Abildsø and Ulven / Teisen, the existing E6 is to be dismantled to a normal municipal road (construction of bus lanes). At the same time, the new route between Abildsø and Teisen is to be built east of the existing route in the form of a very long tunnel (Manglerud tunnel, length approx. 4,500 m), which in future will then form the only route on the E6 through Oslo. The new route is to have six lanes at a maximum speed of 80 km / h. Likewise, the expansion of the existing route between Klemetsrud and Abildsø. In addition, the Teisen motorway junction is to be rebuilt and the Ulven lane divider to be rebuilt. The planning order for this was placed in 2016. Construction is scheduled to start between 2022 and 2027.

Project E6 Kolomoen - Moelv:
The expansion of the motorway from Kolomeon to Hamar has already been completed. From the current end of the motorway south of Hamar, the existing intersection-free expressway to Moelv is to be expanded into a four-lane motorway. The construction work for this is already well advanced and commissioning is scheduled for 2020.

Project E6 Moelv - Biri:
The further expansion of the existing intersection-free expressway between Moelv and Biri is in the planning stage ; This route is also to be expanded into a four-lane motorway, construction to begin in 2020, commissioning planned for 2025.

Project E6 Gudbrandsdalen Biri - Otta:
At the end of December 2016, a completely new route north of Lillehammer between Frya and Sjoa ( Vinstra bypass ) was put into operation, with the Hundorp tunnel (length 4,300 m) and the Teigkampen tunnel 3,600 m long; The new route is a freeway-like expressway free of intersections, but with only one lane per direction of travel. Further sections between Lillehammer and Otta that have not yet been developed as an intersection-free expressway are already in the planning phase for the expansion, so that in the next few years the motorway-like expansion should extend continuously from the south to Otta.

Project E6 Ulsberg - Vindåsliene:
From Ulsberg to Vindalsliene, the E6 is being expanded into a four-lane motorway. The new route has a total length of 24.5 kilometers; three tunnels and a bridge are being built. Commissioning is planned for 2023.

Project E6 Vindalsliene - Korporals Bridge:
To increase traffic safety and improve the flow of traffic, the section at Støren is to be extended in a southerly direction to beyond Soknedal . For this purpose, a completely new route is being built to bypass Soknedal, which includes three new tunnels and a new bridge over the Sokna River. The longest tunnel, the Soknedalstunnel, will be around 3,600 meters long. Construction of the first section began in 2015, the second section is also under construction; commissioning is planned for 2020 or 2023.

Project E6 Håggåtunnelen - Skjerdingstad:
In order to increase the flow of traffic, relieve residents and reduce travel time, the section from the current end of the upgraded line at Støren is to be extended to the north to the existing intersection-free expressway that leads from Skjerdingstad towards Trondheim. Part of this construction project is the construction of the 2,210 meter long Lundamo tunnel (bypass) and the construction of the Foss tunnel (1,680 m). The 20 kilometer new road is in the planning status and, like the Soknedal bypass, is part of the overall project, which involves the construction of an intersection-free expressway between Ulsberg and Melhus along its entire length.

Project E6 Trondheim - Melhus:
The four-lane route from Trondheim in the direction of Melhus to Heimdal was extended by 8.1 kilometers until shortly before Melhus. Construction started in 2015 and commissioning took place in 2019.

Project E6 Ranheim (Trondheim) - Værnes:
The existing two-lane intersection-free expressway between Ranheim and Værnes is to be expanded to form a motorway with four lanes, so that from Trondheim to Trondheim Airport near Værnes the carriageway will consist of two lanes in each direction. Tunnel safety is also to be improved ( Helltunnel , Stavsjøfjelltunnel, Væretunnel), also by increasing traffic safety by eliminating oncoming traffic in the tunnels. For this purpose, a second tube is being built next to each of the three tunnels. Construction will start in 2020 and commissioning is scheduled for 2025.

Project E6 Kvithammer ( Stjørdal ) - Åsen:
The approximately 22-kilometer stretch from the current end of the expansion of the intersection-free expressway at Kvithammer to Åsen is being redesigned, expanded and, for the most part, clearly redesigned as it is in poor condition, is narrow and winding to straighten the hilly, curvy route and reduce inclines / slopes. An intersection-free expressway will be built (three lanes, i.e. alternately one direction of travel two lanes, opposite direction one lane). The planning has been completed, construction will start in 2020/21, the project should be completed by 2025/26. With the execution of this project, the existing expressway from Trondheim to Åsen will be extended.

Project E6 Åsen north - Mære:
The 50 km long section between Åsen north and Mære has a high traffic load, but in parts it is very winding, narrow and in poor condition. Therefore, the road is to be expanded and partly re-routed (rebuilt) in order to increase the flow of traffic and traffic safety, with local traffic being separated from the E6. The section from Vassmarka to Ronglan (before Levanger ) has already been expanded; There the carriageway was widened and provided with a central guardrail and overtaking lane. This line was commissioned in 2018. In combination with the "E6 Kvithammer - Åsen" project, the E6 from Trondheim to Ronglan is to become an intersection-free expressway.

Project E6 Kjæran - Fleskhus ( Verdal ):
The approximately 4 kilometer long route through Verdal is to be expanded by building a fast lane (two lanes in each direction) and upgraded to a four lane expressway with a central guardrail. The planning for this began in 2013.

Project E6 Selli - Asp:
At Asphaugen (near Steinkjer ) the roadway is to be rehabilitated and partly also re-routed. Detailed planning started in 2016.

Project E6 Fjerdingen - Grøndalselva:
Between Fjerdingen and the Grøndalselva (north of Grong ) the roadway is to be rehabilitated over a length of 11 kilometers and partly also re-routed (straightening), as the existing route is partly narrow and very curvy and thus meets today's requirements no longer corresponds. The detailed planning was started in 2016, the implementation is planned for the period 2018 to 2023.

Project E6 Helgeland Süd:
Between Osen (south portal of the Korgfjell tunnel) and Mosjøen, as well as between Brenna and Flym and at Majahaugen , the road is being renewed and expanded, in some cases with re-routing. Construction will start in autumn 2016 and completion is planned for 2020. The main reason for the construction work is that the sections of the route are in poor condition (section Kulstad Tal - Åkvik - Mjåvatn unstable ground conditions), the road is very narrow and winding and, above all, only slowly passable for trucks. The construction project is carried out as part of a contract procedure, i. H. the contractor is responsible for the design / construction and operation of the route sections (for 15 years). The total length of the upgraded line is around 78 kilometers. The aim is to reduce the costs for the maintenance and operation of the route sections and to increase traffic safety. The residents should also be better protected from the traffic load.

Project E6 Helgeland Kappskarmo - Brattåsen - Lien:
On the Kappskarmo - Brattåsen - Lien section, an extensive road expansion project with major rerouting is being carried out; The new E6 will be around two and a half kilometers shorter in this section than the old route, which will then be downgraded to a municipal road. The core of the project is the Trofors bypass , which will be completely rebuilt and will lead around on the west side, where it will have a new connection to road 73. The new bypass will have several bridges and a tunnel. A total of 7.1 kilometers will be newly built between Kappskarmo and Brattåsen and 15.2 kilometers on the section from Brattåsen to Lien (in this area there are difficult soil conditions that require extensive stabilization measures). The construction of this measure takes place in the classic contract process; After completion, the line will be operated by the operator of the Helgeland Süd project. The construction project should be completed by 2020.

Project E6 Helgeland Nord:
Between Bolna and Fallheia , the entire length of the route is being revised and expanded in order to improve the poor condition of the route and the width of the lane and to increase traffic safety. The construction project extends to around 62 kilometers, 47 kilometers of which are expansion of existing roads and 15 kilometers of new construction. It is carried out as part of a contract procedure, i. H. the contractor is responsible for the design / construction and operation of the route sections (for 15 years). Construction started in autumn 2016 and completion is planned for 2020.

Project E6 Sørelva - Borkamo:
The 20-kilometer stretch in Saltdal between Sørelva (northern end of Saltfjellet ) and Borkamo is also to be revised and expanded. Plans for this started in 2016.

Project E6 Sørfoldtunnele Megården - Mørsvikbotn:
The project envisages the construction of a new route with new bridges and tunnels between Megården and Mørsvikbotn , whereby the numerous steep uphill and downhill
sections that currently exist there are to be avoided by re-routing. The project is in the planning status.

Project E6 Mørsvikbotn - Ballangen:
This project aims at a road solution as a replacement for the ferry route across the Tysfjord (underwater tunnel or bridge or considerable re-routing). In addition, the section from Mørsvikbotn to Mørsviksee is to be re-routed, as the existing route is in poor condition, very winding and sometimes very steep. Another sub-project includes the expansion / new construction between Femtvasslia and Sandnesbotn ( Kråkmofjellet ). Of this, the section between Femtvasslia and Kråkmo has already been completed and put into operation in 2016. This 5.1 kilometer long new route eliminates a bottleneck that often had to be closed due to the weather in winter (mountain crossing) and had a steep uphill / downhill gradient; it includes the new Kråkimo tunnel (length 520 m) and the new Femtvasselv bridge (length 77 m). The second section (Kråkmo - Sandnesbotn, length 3.4 km) is still in the planning status for 2020.

Project E6 Narvik (Sjømannskirka - Ornes):
The section of the E6 running through Narvik is the most accident-prone part of the E6 in Northern Norway and has a very high traffic load. For this reason, a long tunnel is to be built between Sjømannskirka and Ornes in the city of Narvik, passing the city center to the east (length 1,365 m); this can relieve the city center of through traffic.

Project E6 Hålogalandsbrua:
The E6 was redesigned /
routed between Narvik and Øyjord and a completely new crossing was built directly from Narvik across the Ofotfjord. This shortened the route by 18 kilometers; the travel time was reduced by about 20 minutes, as the fjord no longer has to be bypassed via the Rombaksbrücke. The heart of the new route is the Hålogalandsbrücke over the Ofotfjord, a 1,533 meter long suspension bridge. A 1.4 kilometer long new road and the 270 meter long Ornestunnel as access to the new bridge were also built on the Narvik side. On the Øyjord side there are 3.5 kilometers of new road to the bridge as well as the Storlikoll (330 m) and Trældal (1,100 m) tunnels, NOT part of the new crossing, but part of the old E6 as access to the E10 towards Bjørnfell or the connection to the E10 Direction Lofoten) part of the construction project, which went into operation in 2018.

Project E6 Stormyra - Bjerkvik:
As a continuation of the Hålogalandsbrua project, the route between Stormyra (end of the new line from the Hålogalands bridge) to Bjerkvik is to be optimized and the roadway expanded. Planning for this began in 2016.

Project E6 Olsborg - Heia:
The section from Olsborg (near Bardufoss ) and Heia is to be refurbished and widened / expanded over its entire length in three project sections. The Heia rest area is also to be expanded, and in some cases separate cycle / pedestrian paths are to be added. The planning for this began in 2016.

Project E6 Nordkjosbotn - Hatteng:
The E6 is to be redesigned / routed between Nordkjosbotn and Hatteng .

Project E6 Indre Nordnes - Skardalen:
To shorten the route, the almost 5,810 meter long Nordnest tunnel was built near
Manndalen (commissioning 2018). This shortened the length of the E6 by almost 10 kilometers.

Project E6 Langslett - Sørkjosen:
In order to bypass the existing mountain crossing (Sørkjosfjellet) between Sørkjosen and Langslett , the Sørkjo tunnel was built there (length 4,670 m, opening 2018).

Project E6 Kvænangsfjellet (Oksfjordhamn - Karvik):
The existing mountain crossing between Oksfjordhamn and Karvik ( Kvænangsfjellet ) is often difficult to pass due to weather influences and difficult road conditions and often has to be closed in winter due to snow drifts. For this reason, the old route across the mountains is to be replaced by a new route with a tunnel solution. For this purpose, a completely new route with three longer tunnels (Mettevolliatunnel, Rakkeneslängstertunnel, longest tunnel will be the Malingsfjell tunnel) is to be built between Tverrelva and Sandneselva. In 2016 the plans are well advanced.

Project E6 Alta West Storsandness - Hjemmeluft:
At Storsandness , the 3,800 meter long Áilega tunnel through Helligfjellet was built to shorten the route (commissioning 2018). At the end of 2016, the 1,190-meter-long Storvikatunnel between
Haslev and Møllnes was opened to traffic at Alta to shorten the route . Also in December 2016 at Melsvik been taken to shorten the track 2,400 meters long Melsviktunnel in operation. Further sections of the Alta West project have already been completed, e.g. B. the route between Langnesbukt to Jansnes (2008), between Jansnes and Haslev with the Storelva Bridge and the Talviktunnel (2015/16) and between Møllnes via Kvenvik to Hjemmeluft with the Kåfjorden Bridge, Sáhkkobátni Tunnel, Tyskhaug Tunnel, Aslakheim Tunnel and Kvenvikel Bridge (2013).

Project E6 Replacement of bridges in Nord-Trøndelag, Nordland, Troms and Finnmark
. For example, the old Finneidstraumenbrücke near Fauske (combined road / railroad bridge in steel truss construction) should be replaced by a 950 meter long new building in order to remove the currently narrowed lane width. Other bridge structures on the E6 in Northern Norway are also to be renewed, in some cases with rerouting in order to shorten the length of the road, reduce inclines or make the route more weather-independent (e.g. Midtengbekkenbrücke, Medbyelvbrücke, Skogstadbrücke or Numedal Bridge). The Tana bridge will also be replaced by a modern cable-stayed bridge by 2018, and the Langfjordstrømmen bridge at Kirkenes will also be renewed. The Nyelv Bridge at Varangerbotn, including the access routes, is also to be renewed. Likewise the Vuolmmašjohka bridge at Olderfjord. At Grong it is planned to renew the bridges over the Litjåa and the Fjerdingelva and to expand the distance between the bridges.
