history

There are several places with rock carvings . A settlement focus was already here in the Viking times .

Stjørdal also includes the island of Steinvikholmen in the Åsenfjord with the remains of the Steinvikholmen fortress, built in 1530 and built by the last Archbishop of Nidaros, Olav Engelbrektsson .

The fortress of Hegra is also located in the municipality. It was built between 1907 and 1910 against a possible attack by Sweden after the union with Sweden was dissolved in 1905. In 1940, 200 Norwegian soldiers fought there against German troops for 23 days . Since the fortress was oriented towards Sweden and thus to the east, it was only of limited use against a German attack from the west. Nevertheless, the fortress was never conquered militarily and is still a symbol of the Norwegian resistance in World War II .

Stjørdal used to belong to Stjórdælafylki and thus in the old thing district of Frostathing .
