Frøya is an island off the coast of Central Norway in the Northern Sea. With some surrounding islands it forms the westernmost municipality (municipality) in Fylke Trøndelag .

The administrative center is the village of Sistranda on the east coast of the island. Other settlements are Bogøyvær, Sula, and Mausund on the north coast and Titran on the west coast.

The Stadtwerke München and the Norwegian company Trønderenergi operate a joint project for a wind farm with 14 wind turbines off the island. In April 2019 there was a dispute between the municipality of Frøya and the companies as to whether the building permit has now expired.

Geography and fauna

The island of Frøya is 147 km², but the area of the municipality is 244 km². In addition to the main island, the municipality also has around 5,400 smaller islands and cliffs. Frøya itself is relatively flat with a highest point of 74  moh. lies.

Most of the municipality belongs to the Froan nature reserve , which was established in 1979 and covers a total of 400 km². Around 50 different bird species breed in the reserve. There are also countless birds that visit the area briefly. Froan is also the core area for the Norwegian gray seal population.

The main island's 163 waters are mainly home to trout . Part of the red deer herd from the neighboring island of Hitra has also moved here. The population is independently viable and is also hunted. Nevertheless, it is significantly more modest than the herd in the neighboring community.
