Levanger is a Norwegian city and municipality in Trøndelag . The center has had city rights since 1836 . Levanger lost this temporarily during the municipal reform in 1962, but received it again on January 1, 1997.

history

The Kirkegata in Levanger, January 2014

Levanger was an early trading point for the exchange of goods between the people from Jämtland (Sweden) and the Northmen. The people from Jämtland brought iron, grain, hides and skins in exchange for dried fish, salted herring and long-distance trade goods brought in from Trondheim .

In 1846 a major fire destroyed 110 of 133 houses; In 1877 113 of 136 houses burned down, and in 1897 there were 104 of 133 houses. The reconstruction after this last major fire shapes the cityscape to this day.

Until about 1885 Levanger stood on the large estate of HS Jelstrup. Then the municipality bought the area from him.

Levanger has always had two fairs, the March fair in February / March and the Levanger fair in July / August. During the March fair, all the city's lights are turned off for one evening and the population gathers for a festive torchlight procession on the market square. First mentioned in 1530, the tradition should actually go back even further.

The city is a member of Cittàslow , a movement founded in Italy in 1999 to slow down and improve the quality of life in cities.
