Knut Knudsen (born October 12, 1950 in Levanger ) is a former Norwegian cyclist .
As an amateur, he was initially active in track cycling and took part in the pursuit of the Summer Olympics in Mexico when he was just 18 in 1968. Shortly before the Olympics, he won his first national championship (in the 1000-meter time trial). During his career, Knudsen won a total of thirteen national championship titles in various disciplines ( single pursuit, 1000-meter time trial , road race and individual time trial ). He won the gold medal in the singles pursuit at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich . Later two silver and one bronze medals were added to the track cycling world championships . From 1974 to 1981 Knudsen was a professional in Italy and celebrated a total of 49 victories in road races. His most important success is the overall victory in the Tirreno – Adriatico tour in 1979. In the Giro d'Italia , he won six stages and wore the Maglia Rosa of the leader in the overall classification for four days .
In 1972 and 1973 he won the Norwegian Sportsman of the Year election , and in 1972 the Morgenbladet gold medal and the Fearnleys olympiske ærespris . Knudsen received the Kongepokal (King's Cup), which is awarded for the best athletic performance at Norwegian championships, in 1972 and 1973.
In 1975, after a positive doping test, Knudsen received a ten-minute time penalty on a tour of Belgium.
