Fearnleys olympiske ærespris
Fearnleys olympiske ærespris ( German Fearnleys Olympic honorary award ) is an award given on the occasion of the Olympic Games by the Norges idrettsforbund og olympiske og paralympiske komité (NIF), the Norwegian Sports Confederation and the national Olympic and Paralympic committee. Norway's most outstanding athlete or team is honored at summer and winter games , with men and women competing against each other.
The prize was donated in 1952 in connection with the Olympic Winter Games in Oslo by Thomas Fearnley (1880–1961). The Norwegian shipowner was enthusiastic about the sport and was a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 1927 to 1950 . The winners will be honored with a bronze sculpture created by Per Palle Storm (1910–1994), which is modeled on the famous Greek statue Diskobolos (discus thrower) by the sculptor Myron . Like the famous Holmenkollen and Aftenposten gold medals , each athlete can only receive the Fearnleys olympiske ærespris once.
In 2012, the award ceremony took place together with the award of the Regjeringens paralympiske ærespris (Eng. "Paralympic Honorary Award of the Norwegian Government") at the end of October 2012 during a banquet organized by the Norwegian government to which all Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic participants were invited were. King Harald V , his daughter Märtha Louise and three ministers also attended the event.
Award winners
Fearnley's olympiske ærespris were awarded to women in eight out of 39 cases, including two women's sports teams. The most common sport among the honored winter sports enthusiasts is speed skating with six wins, followed by cross-country skiing (five successes). Athletics also dominated the Summer Olympians with five victories.
In 1991, the sports official Arne B. Mollén was the only non-athlete to receive the award.
