Alf John Hansen (born July 13, 1948 in Oslo ) is a former Norwegian rower .

Career

In the 1970s he was one of the most successful rowers in the world. At world championships between 1974 and 1979, he and his older brother Frank Hansen won three gold and one silver medal in a double scull. The greatest success, however, was the gold medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . At the Games in Moscow in 1980 , he was unable to repeat this success due to the Olympic boycott of 64 states, which Norway also joined. His brother Frank then ended his career, but Alf Hansen successfully continued his sports career with a new partner. Between 1981 and 1983 he won three medals in double sculls with Rolf Bernt Thorsen , including the gold medal at the 1982 World Cup. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , Hansen was a member of the Norwegian team in double sculls and won, like a year earlier, at the World Championships , Silver. After the 1991 World Cup, he retired at the age of 43.

In 1990 Alf John Hansen was awarded the Thomas Keller Medal , the highest honor of the International Rowing Association . In 1975 he was awarded the Morgenbladet gold medal in his home country and in 1976 the Fearnleys olympiske ærespris .
