Leslie Southwood

Leslie Frank "Dick" Southwood (born January 18, 1906 in Fulham , † February 7, 1986 in Long Wittenham , Oxfordshire ) was a British rower .

Southwood joined the Auriol Rowing Club after graduating from Latymer Upper School . At the suggestion of Jack Beresford , he moved to the Thames Rowing Club in London.

At the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1932 , Southwood rowed in a single , but only finished fourth and last in the final after a shoulder cramp. In 1933 Southwood won the Wingfield Sculls.

For the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , Southwood formed a double scull with Beresford, the two won six seconds ahead of the Germans Willi Kaidel and Joachim Pirsch . Southwood and Beresford were the only non-German crew besides the US eight to win in Berlin.

In 1939, a double scull competition was held at the Henley Royal Regatta on the occasion of its centenary, Southwood and Beresford finished tied with the Italian European champions from 1938 Ettore Broschi and Giorgio Scherli .
