Tranquilo Cappozzo
Tranquilo Cappozzo or Tranquilo Capozzo (born January 25, 1918 in the United States , † May 14, 2003 in Valle Hermoso , Province of Córdoba ) was an Argentine rower .
Cappozzo grew up in the United States and came to Argentina at the age of 18. At the Olympic Games in 1948 he competed in one ; he was eliminated in the semifinals against the later bronze medalist Romolo Catasta from Italy.
In 1952, for reasons of age, the association no longer trusted him to start single, but offered a start in double sculls with Eduardo Guerrero . Cappozzo initially refused because Guerrero was too undisciplined, but ultimately gave in. The two Argentines won the 1952 Olympic Games in front of the boats from the Soviet Union and Uruguay. The gold medal for the two rowers was not only the only Olympic gold medal for Argentina at the 1952 Olympic Games and the only gold medal in rowing for Argentina at the Olympic Games, it was also the last Olympic victory for Argentinian athletes until 2004, the year after Cappozzo's death .
