The double scull (abbreviation 2x ) is a boat class in rowing . Two rowers sit in the boat, each driving the boat with two sculls . Helpers are not provided for in any of the boats used in racing rowing .

In the Olympic program, the double scull has long been the largest boat class in the scull area, because the larger double scull has only been used since 1976. On the other hand, the sculled two-man was part of the Olympic rowing regatta as early as 1904 and since 1920 until today . The women's double sculls also became Olympic in 1976 with the introduction of women's races. The 1996 Atlanta Games were followed by the lightweight double sculls of both sexes, for which, however, other boat classes were deleted from the program.

The rowers in the (unrestricted) double scull do not have to adhere to a weight limit. This does not apply to the lightweight version , which is also Olympic : men's teams may weigh a maximum of 70 kg on average, women's teams 57 kg. The classic competition route in double sculls corresponds to the Olympic distance of 2000 m.

The material and construction of the boat are similar to those of typical racing rowing boats. The boat is about 9.5 meters long, about 33 cm wide at the waterline, and weighs at least 27 kg. There are two outriggers attached to the boat on each side of the boat . Although there is no helmsman on board, double sculls are built without a foot control and must therefore be steered by rowing more forcefully on one side (“pulling over”).

In addition to the boat class described here, there are also generally two without helmsman (2-) and two with helmsman (2+) from the genre of two . In contrast to the double scull , both are belt boat classes , and therefore as such are somewhat slower than the sculled double. Aside from racing rowing, double sculls in gig construction are used in recreational and hiking rowing . However, these usually have a helmsman and are considerably wider, more stable, more robust and slower than the racing double scull.
