Roswietha Zobelt

Roswietha Zobelt (born November 24, 1954 in Rittersgrün as Roswietha Reichel ) is a former rower from the GDR. She was a two-time Olympic champion and a four-time world champion.

Growing up in the Ore Mountains, Zobelt first did winter sports and athletics. Because of her height, she was discovered for rowing in 1970. The 1.88 m tall athlete competed for the SG Unit Potsdam and was trained by Barbara Müller. In 1972 she won the Spartakiad in eight and double fours . In 1973 she won her first GDR championship with the double fours and became European champion. In 1974 and 1975 she became world champion.

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Zobelt won Olympic gold in quadruples together with Jutta Lau , Viola Poley , Anke Borchmann and helmsman Liane Weigelt . In 1977 she won the world championships together with Anke Borchmann in double sculls . After the double scull with Anke Borchmann only took sixth place at the rowing world championships, Zobelt returned to the double scull and was again world champion in 1979 with this boat.

Zobelt ended her career with the second Olympic victory in the double quad at the 1980 Olympic Games together with Jutta Ploch , Jutta Lau, Sybille Reinhardt and Liane Buhr-Weigelt. After her career, she returned to the Ore Mountains with her husband, the rower Gunter Zobelt, and worked as a physiotherapist. The bobsleigh pilot Stephanie Schneider is Zobelt's niece.
