Tian achieved her first success at the 2005 China Games, where she finished first with a foursome. Two years later she won her first World Cup race in a double scull. At the 2007 World Rowing Championships in Munich , Tian and her partner Li Qin won the gold medal in a double scull. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , she and her partner finished in fourth place in a double scull with a time of 7: 15.85 minutes and thus just missed the medal ranks.
