activities

Brockenstuben

The organization operates 25 second-hand shops across Switzerland (as of 2016), which enable the purpose of the association to be carried out with their net proceeds. This makes the association one of the three largest second hand shop operators in Switzerland.

In the second-hand shops, used goods of all kinds are accepted from private individuals or picked up free of charge. Unsaleable furniture as well as garbage from apartment and house clearings will be ecologically separated and disposed of by the association for a cost-covering compensation. The assortment of an optimally stocked second hand shop covers the entire non-food area, so that people on a modest budget can furnish a complete apartment. At the same time, bargain hunters and collectors will find rarities and antiques. Every second hand shop employs people in the following functions: second hand shop manager, all-rounder / chauffeur and salesman. The staff necessary to operate the Brockenstube are employed on a permanent basis under normal functional and local conditions. Through cooperation with various socially active organizations in the field of the reintegration of the long-term unemployed , people with a disability or school leavers without a job, the association offers temporary internships in its second-hand shops. Thanks to good cooperation with the prison authorities, buses can be processed at HIOB.

Benevol

A number of helpers work on a voluntary basis. This is especially true in the areas of clothing, books, dishes and house clearing. The time commitment of a benevol employee averages two to four hours per week.

Aid projects and recycling

In order to pursue the purpose of the association, the organization in Steffisburg operates the department "Aid Projects & Recycling ". It comprises several warehouses and workshops with loading ramps and forklifts on a 13,000 m² site. Similar to the second-hand shops, medical facilities and equipment such as wheelchairs, entire medical practices and laboratories, X-ray systems, bicycles, machines for wood and metal processing, kitchens, bakeries and shoemakers are dismantled and picked up by a qualified team throughout Switzerland. If necessary, the goods are repaired and overhauled, cleaned and made available for forwarding to domestic and foreign aid organizations . In 2010 the organization carried out a total of 257 relief operations in 46 countries.
