The National Museum in Gdansk ( Polish : Muzeum Narodowe w Gdańsku ) is one of the seven most important museums in Poland.

history

The city museum was set up in the building of the former Franciscan monastery as early as the third quarter of the nineteenth century . The collections of the Gdańsk sculptor Rudolf Freitag (1805–1890) formed the basis of the museum . In 1884 the arts and crafts museum was attached. After the Second World War the museum was renamed " Muzeum Pomorskie " (Pomeranian Museum) and moved to Oliva . Three more museums were created from the collections: the Maritime Museum ( Muzeum Morskie ), the Archaeological Museum ( Muzeum Archeologiczne ) and the Museum of History of the City of Gdańsk ( Muzeum Historyczne Miasta Gdańska ). In 1972 the museum was renamed Muzeum Narodowe w Gdańsku ( National Museum Gdansk ).

The collections in the main building

The museum shows arts and crafts from the historically important epochs of the city and the surrounding East Pomerania.

The Middle Ages are represented with church carvings and altars from the surrounding area. The most famous painting in the museum comes from the Netherlands, a major work by Hans Memling from around 1470 , the monumental triptych of the Last Judgment .

Here is also the most extensive Polish collection of great works by Anton Möller , 1563–1611, known and entered into art history as the “Painter of Danzig”.

Flemish and Dutch painting, especially of the 17th century, reflects the cultural importance of the city's trade relations with the Netherlands.

Dutch and Swedish baroque faience , Gdańsk stoves, remarkable ironwork and the pewter collection, the art of Gdańsk cabinet makers and Gdańsk silver work, which is distinguished by its extraordinary decorative richness, are the focus of the handicrafts departments, but not all areas are permanently on display.
