Samuel Barathay

Samuel René Louis Barathay (born June 1, 1968 in Vinzier ) is a former French rower . In 1996 he won the Olympic bronze medal in double sculls , and in 1993 he was world champion in this boat class.

Athletic career

Barathay won with the quadruple sculls the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in 1985, the year he finished fourth in one . In 1987 he reached third place with the double scull in the Match des Seniors , a forerunner competition to the U23 World Championships , in 1988 he was seventh. In 1989 he won the gold medal in the senior match with the double foursome . At the World Championships in 1989 Barathay finished tenth in the double scull. The following year, he rowed the quad scull to ninth place at the 1990 World Championships , and the French quad scull took the same place1991 . The double foursome won the bronze medal at the 1991 Mediterranean Games . At the 1992 Olympic Games , the French double scull started with Fiorenzo Di Giovanni , Fabrice LeClerc , Yves Lamarque and Samuel Barathay and finished sixth.

In 1993 Barathay and Lamarque formed a double scull. They won the title at the Mediterranean Games in Languedoc-Roussillon and at the World Championships in Račice u Štětí . At the 1994 World Championships, Barathay and Lamarque won the bronze medal behind the Norwegians and the Germans. The following year, Barathay rowed the double scull to seventh place at the World Championships . At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , the 1.85 m tall Barathay competed with the 2.01 m tall Frédéric Kowal in a double scull . The two French won their preliminary and their semi-finals. In the final, they finished third behind the Italians and Norwegians, one and a half seconds behind the Norwegians.

At the 1997 World Championships , Barathay finished sixth in the quadruple sculls. After a two-year break, Barathay returned in 2000. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 , Yvan Deslavière , Guillaume Jeannet , Sébastien Vieilledent and Samuel Barathay finished tenth in the double fours.
