Stephan Volkert

Stephan Volkert (born August 7, 1971 in Cologne ) is a former German competitive rower who won two Olympic gold medals, six world championships and one junior world championship.

Volkert, 2.00 m tall and an average weight of 100 kg, was a scull rower and was 13 times German champion in double fours and double sculls and once German champion in single sprint. He started nationally for the RTHC Bayer Leverkusen , for which he has been working as a trainer since the end of his active career.

His greatest successes on the international stage are:

  • Junior World Champion 1989,
  • Four-time world champion in four-four (1993, 1999, 2002, 2003), plus one runner-up (1995) and one third (1994),
  • two-time world champion in double sculls (1997, 1998),
  • two Olympic victories in quadruples ( 1992 , 1996 ) and a bronze medal ( 2000 ).

For his sporting success he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on June 23, 1993 by Federal President von Weizsäcker .

Stephan Volkert is married and has three children (one boy and two girls). He lives with his family near Cologne.
