Paul Douma

Paul Douma (born November 21, 1962 in St. Catharines ) is a former Canadian rower who won the world title in the quad scull in 1985 .

Career

The 1.91 m tall Paul Douma from the St. Catharines Rowing Club formed the Canadian quadruple scull in 1985, together with Doug Hamilton , Robert Mills and Melvin LaForme , with only Hamilton from the crew, who played at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles Won bronze medal.

At the 1985 World Championships in Hazewinkel, the Canadians won with 0.28 seconds ahead of the boat from the GDR, behind which the double foursome from Czechoslovakia received the bronze medal. A year later, at the 1986 World Championships in Nottingham, the double scull from the Soviet Union won ahead of the Poles, followed by the four Canadians rowing bronze. In 1987 the double foursome from the USSR won the 1987 World Championships in Copenhagen in front of the Norwegians, followed by Hamilton, Mills, Douma and LaForme won bronze as in the previous year. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, the four Canadians were the last to miss the A-final in the semi-finals and finished in ninth place overall as third of the B-final.
