Peter Kersten (born February 1, 1958 in Magdeburg ) is a former rower from the German Democratic Republic . In 1980 he won the Olympic bronze medal in single .

The rower from SC Magdeburg won the Junior World Championships in 1976 . In 1979 he won together with Klaus Kröppelien , Karl-Heinz Bußert and Joachim Dreifke at the GDR championships in quadruples . At the World Championships in Bled, the four-man won the world title ahead of the German boat. For the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Peter Kersten managed to qualify in a single. At the Olympic regatta, he took third place behind the Finns Pertti Karppinen and Wassili Jakuscha from the Soviet Union. In 1981 Kersten returned to the double fours and won together with Martin Winter , Uwe Heppner and Joachim Dreifke at the GDR championships. At the 1981 World Rowing Championships in Munich, Karl-Heinz Bußert was in the boat instead of Dreifke, the double foursome won the world championship, the sixth for the GDR since this boat class had been on the world championship program for the first time in 1974.

Kersten is a trained mechanical engineer and repair fitter.
