Adam Marek Korol (born August 20, 1974 in Gdansk ) is a Polish rower who won Olympic gold in quadruples in 2008. From June to November 2015 he was Minister of Sport in the Kopacz cabinet .

Life

Korol first took part in the 1996 Olympic Games when he finished 13th in a double scull at the Atlanta Games . In the following years he sat in double sculls with Marek Kolbowicz , who had rowed in double sculls in 1996. After finishing fifth at the 1997 World Championships, the two won bronze in Cologne in 1998 behind the boats from Germany and Norway. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, the two finished sixth.

From 2001 Korol and Kolbowicz sat in the double fours, who finished sixth at the 2001 World Championships in the line-up of Adam Bronikowski , Kolbowicz, Sławomir Kruszkowski and Korol. This was followed by silver in Seville in 2002 and bronze in Milan in 2003, and at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens the four missed the bronze medal, seven hundredths of a second behind the Ukrainian boat.

In 2005 the boat was reassigned: Konrad Wasielewski and Michał Jeliński moved on for Bronikowski and Kruszkowski . After a third and a second place in the rowing world cup , the boat won the title at the world championships in Gifu . In 2006 the boat won the World Cup in Munich and Poznan and successfully defended the title at the 2006 World Rowing Championships in Eton. In 2007, after winning the World Cup in Linz and Amsterdam at the 2007 World Rowing Championships in Munich , the four-man won the third title in a row. In 2008 the Polish four-man was always at the forefront, with the World Cup winning in Munich, second place in Lucerne and third place in Poznan. At the Olympic Games in Beijing, the Polish foursome was able to clearly stand out from the other boats and won by over two seconds over the boats from Italy and France.

After winning the 2009 World Rowing Championships and the 2010 European Rowing Championships , Korol took a break, but returned to the double foursome in 2012.

On June 15, 2015, the Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz announced that Korol would be appointed as the new Minister of Sports and Tourism . He was sworn in on June 16, 2015. With the change of government after the parliamentary elections on October 25, 2015 , his term as minister also ended.
