Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Spinjow

Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Spinjow ( Russian: Николай Николаевич Спинёв ; born May 30, 1974 in Rostov-on-Don ) is a former Russian rower . He won with Sergei Fedorowzew , Igor Kravtsov and Alexei Swirin 2004 Olympic gold medal in quadruple sculls , the first and only gold medal for Russian rowers since the collapse of the Soviet Union .

Career

In 1993, the first year that Russian rowers competed under the Russian flag at the rowing world championships, Spinjow won the bronze medal in the double foursome at the Nations Cup , the U23 world rowing championship. At his first world championships in the adult class, in 1994 in Indianapolis, he reached tenth place in the double foursome. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, he finished eighth with the double fours, just like a year later at the 1997 World Championships . At the 1999 World Championships , Spinjow tried to qualify for the 2000 Olympic Games in a single , which failed by reaching the D-final and taking twentieth place in the overall standings.

At the 2002 World Championships , Spinjow was back in the double foursome, which finished fifth, a placement that the foursome also achieved in 2003 . At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , the Russian four-man finished second behind the Poles, in the first semifinal the Poles won ahead of the German boat, in the second semifinals the Czechs won ahead of the Russians. In the final, the Russians won just ahead of the Czechs, while the Ukrainians came third just ahead of the Poles. At the 2005 World Championships , the Russians competed with the same line-up as when they won the Olympic Games and took eighth place. The following year came 6th place. At his third Olympic participation in Beijing in 2008 , Spinjow finished seventh with the double foursome.
