Philipp Wende (born July 4, 1985 in Wurzen ) is a German rower . In 2012 and 2016 he won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in quadruples , as well as the 2015 world championship in the same boat class.

Life

Philipp Wende started rowing in 1998. He made his international appearance for the first time at the age of 24, when he competed in a double scull with René Bertram , Daniel Makowski and René Burmeister at the European Championships in Brest and took fourth place.

In 2011, the 1.99 meter tall rower from the Wurzener Rudervereinigung Schwarz-Gelb won his first ever World Cup regatta in Munich after he had already won the German championship title in the quadruple scull together with Tim Grohmann , Karl Schulze and Lauritz Schoof . Schulze, Wende, Schoof and Grohmann took second place at the World Cup in Hamburg and won in Lucerne. At the World Championships in Bled , the four rowers received the silver medal behind the Australian boat. At the Olympic Games in 2012, the team won the gold medal in the double fours with the same cast in London.

In 2013, Wende took a break from top international sport. He concentrated on his studies, was German university champion in the single and then competed in the same boat class at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan , where he finished 7th. From 2014 he was again part of the German double fours, with which he was able to win the bronze medal both at the European Championships in Belgrade and at the World Championships in Amsterdam . In 2015, the team only finished sixth at the European Championships due to injury . At the season highlight at the World Rowing Championships on Lac d'Aiguebelette , the team with Karl Schulze, Philipp Wende, Lauritz Schoof and batsman Hans Gruhne won the world title. The following year the crew also won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .

Philipp Wende studied at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg ; In 2013 he successfully completed his studies as a graduate engineer for geotechnical engineering and mining .

In March 2017, Philipp Wende ended his sporting career and began his career as a graduate engineer . The athlete is the son of the two rowers Ines Wende and Stefan Wende. Philipp Wende has been married to Jenny Wende since autumn 2015, and the couple have a son (* 2017).

In January 2013, Philipp Wende was honored with honorary citizenship of his native Wurzen for his sporting achievements .

For his sporting successes, Wende was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by Federal President Gauck on November 1, 2016 .
