Jürgen Bertow

Jürgen Bertow (born April 21, 1950 in Berlin ) is a former rower from the GDR . In 1974 he became world champion in quadruples .

Bertow rowed for SC Dynamo Berlin . He was second in 1968 at the Junior World Championships in One . In 1973 and 1974 Bertow won the GDR championship in double fours . In 1974 Joachim Dreifke , Götz Draeger , Rüdiger Reiche and Jürgen Bertow won the World Championships on the Rotsee near Lucerne. Overall, the GDR won the title in six of the eight men's Olympic boat classes at the 1974 World Cup. In 1975 Dreifke and Bertow switched to double sculls . After winning the GDR championship title, they finished second at the World Cup in Nottingham behind the Norwegian brothers Alf and Frank Hansen . At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Bertow joined Hans-Ulrich Schmied and won the bronze medal. In 1978 Jürgen Bertow won again at the GDR championship together with Olaf Moll .

After completing his apprenticeship as a bricklayer, Bertow studied civil engineering and founded his own construction company in the 1980s. In 1974 and 1976 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze for his successes .
