Wolfgang Hönig
Wolfgang Hönig (born January 21, 1954 ) was the first German single world champion in rowing in 1974 .
Career
The rowers from SC Chemie Halle was 1971 junior world champion in one , in 1972, he finished fourth. In 1973 and 1974 he took second place in the double foursome at the GDR championships, but in 1974 won the GDR championship title in the single. At the 1974 World Rowing Championships in Lucerne, he won the world championship title in front of the Americans James Dietz and Mikola Dowgan from the Soviet Union.
In 1975 Christof Kreuziger , Stefan Weisse , Wolfgang Hönig and Wolfgang Güldenpfennig won the GDR championship in quadruples. At the World Rowing Championships in Nottingham in 1975, the four rowers won in front of the boats from Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union. Of this double quad, only Wolfgang Güldenpfennig was in the GDR Olympic team in 1976 . After 1975 Wolfgang Hönig could no longer place himself in the GDR championships.
