Jüri Jaanson (born October 14, 1965 in Tartu , Estonian SSR ) is a former Soviet and Estonian rower . He was world champion and multiple medalist at world championships and the Olympic Games.

Sporting successes

Jaanson started for the Pärnu rowing club . His wife Tatjana is a former rower and now a trainer in Pärnu, who also trained her husband among other things.

Jaanson took part in the 1987 World Championships for the Soviet Union and was fifth in the single competition. At the Summer Olympics in Seoul in 1988 , he was only able to qualify for the B final and finished eighth in the overall standings. He won his first international medal in 1989 at the World Rowing Championships in Bled . When the German Thomas Lange won , he finished third. A year later he became world champion in this discipline in Tasmania . At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona , Jaanson started for Estonia for the first time and came in fifth in the final. In 1995 he was able to win the silver medal at the World Championships in Tampere .

In the following years, Jaanson could not achieve any further success. At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta , he only managed to qualify for the C-final and was 18th overall. In the 1999 World Rowing Championships , he finished seventh, 2000, he arrived at the Olympic Games in Sydney was the last of the A-final finish and finished in sixth place.

Only when the athlete was 38 years old was Jaanson able to place himself on the podium again in internationally important races. In 2004 he was able to win the World Cup race in Poznan and at the Summer Olympics in Athens he won the silver medal behind the Norwegian Olaf Tufte . It was the first Olympic medal for Jaanson on his fifth participation in the Olympics.

In 2005 Jaanson switched to the Estonian four-four . The team won the World Cup races in Eton and Lucerne . At the world championships in Gifu they won the bronze medal. Jaanson succeeded in this in 2007 at the age of 41 with Tõnu Endrekson in double sculls at the 2007 World Rowing Championships in Munich . The two also won the 2007 World Cup races in Lucerne and Amsterdam . In 2008 Jaanson started in double sculls together with Endrekson. At the Olympic Summer Games in Beijing in 2008 , the duo won the silver medal behind the Australian boat. For the 42-year-old Jaanson it was the sixth participation in the Olympic Games. At the subsequent European Rowing Championships in 2008 , he won the title with the Estonian four-four. Jaanson continued his career until 2009, but could no longer assert himself at the top internationally.
