Alberto Demiddi (1971)

Alberto Demiddi (born April 11, 1944 in Buenos Aires , † October 25, 2000 in San Fernando ) was an Argentine rower . With two Olympic medals and the world championship title in 1970, he is one of the most successful rowers in South America.

Career

Demiddi won twelve Argentine championship titles in single rowing from 1962 to 1973 . In 1964, 1965, 1968 and 1970 he was South American champion. In 1964 he finished second in the Henley Royal Regatta , a success that he was able to repeat in 1966.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 he lost in the run-up to the US American Donald Spero , but was ahead of the double Olympic champion Vyacheslav Ivanov . With victory in the second hope race , Demiddi qualified for the final, which was held in strong winds. Ivanov won his third title in a row ahead of Achim Hill from East Berlin and Gottfried Kottmann from Switzerland , and Demiddi took fourth place just two seconds behind Kottmann.

After Demiddi had won the single competition at the Pan American Games in 1967 , he drove to the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico as a favorite . In the preliminary run Demiddi was second behind the German Jochen Meißner , in the semifinals Demiddi was defeated by the Dutch Jan Wienese , but clearly qualified for the final as second. Wienese won the final ahead of Meißner and Demiddi.

Demiddi's most successful years followed: as a guest starter, he became European Champion in 1969, won the World Championship in 1970, and in 1971 he won the European Championship, the Henley Regatta and the Pan-American Games. Demiddi was then named Argentina's Sportsman of the Year in 1969 and 1971. At the 1972 Olympic Games on the Oberschleissheim regatta course near Munich, Demiddi was the clear favorite and won both his preliminary and his semi-finals by a clear margin, but the Russian Yuri Malyshev was faster than Demiddi in his races on both days . In the final, the two fought a tough duel, at the finish Malischew had a narrow lead over Demiddi.

Alberto Demiddi has won everything in his career except the Olympic final, where he had to be content with a fourth, a third and a second place. In 1974 Demiddi ended his career as an active rower.
