Giacobbe Fragomeni (born August 13, 1969 in Milan , Italy ) is a former Italian boxer and former WBC world cruiserweight champion .

Amateur career

Giacobbe Fragomeni won a bronze medal in the light heavyweight division at the Mediterranean Games in 1993 and started at the 1995 World Championships , where he was eliminated in the round of 16 with just 9:12 against Amrou Moustafa.

In 1997 he won the Mediterranean Games in the heavyweight division and took part in the 1997 World Championships , where he was only defeated in the quarterfinals against the later gold medalist Ruslan Chagayev . However, since he was subsequently disqualified because he had already boxed with the professionals, Fragomeni moved up to third place and thus received a bronze medal.

He achieved his greatest success by winning the gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 1998 European Championships , where he also succeeded in beating the eventual double world champion Evgeny Makarenko . He also won the silver medal at the 1998 World Cup with an exit without a fight .

At the 1999 World Championships , he was only eliminated in the quarterfinals 7: 9 against Kevin Evans and started at the 2000 Olympic Games , where he was eliminated in the second round against Isael Álvarez.

Professional career

Giacobbe Fragomeni boxed as a professional from May 2001 to December 2017. He won 25 of his first 26 fights and was IBF -Mediterranean Champion, WBC -International Champion and EBU -European Union Cruiserweight Champion. His only defeat so far he suffered on November 17, 2006 in London in the fight for the EBU European Championship against David Haye .

These successes opened him on October 24, 2008 a WBC world cruiserweight championship opportunity. The WBC title was vacant after David Haye resigned it in May 2008 to move up to the heavyweight division. Fragomeni boxed in his hometown of Milan against the undefeated Czech Rudolf Kraj , silver medalist at the 2000 Olympic Games, who had got the chance for the title by winning the elimination match against the American Matt Godfrey. The fight between Fragomeni and Kraj ended in the eighth round with a technical decision after Fragomeni was injured by an accidental headbutt by the Czech. Then it came to the evaluation of the score sheet, on which Fragomeni was unanimously in the lead and was therefore named the new WBC world champion. He became only the second Italian WBC world champion in this weight class after Massimiliano Duran , who had won the title in July 1990.

On May 16, 2009, he managed a narrow title defense in Rome due to a draw with the Pole Krzysztof Włodarczyk , who at that time was ranked third in the world rankings of Ring Magazine .

In his second title defense on November 21, 2009 in Kiel , he then just lost to the undefeated Hungarian Zsolt Erdei by a majority decision by the judges . Erdei was promoted from light heavyweight for this fight, where he had held the WBO world title since January 2004. However, Erdei resigned the WBC title in January 2010 without having defended it.

On May 15, 2010 Fragomeni was able to box again for the vacant WBC title, but this time lost in the Polish Łódź by technical knockout (TKO) in the eighth round against Krzysztof Włodarczyk.

In his following eight fights he remained unbeaten again, where he was able to defeat Silvio Branco in December 2012 and thereby became WBC Silver Champion. In addition, he was again WBC International Champion with a win against Laszlo Hubert. He recommended himself again for a WBC world championship fight , which he lost again on December 6, 2013 in Chicago against Krzysztof Włodarczyk.

On October 24, 2014 he lost in an EBU European Championship fight in Moscow by knockout (KO) in the fourth round against Rachim Tschachkijew . Fragomeni then only fought four fights, the last on December 22, 2017 at the age of 48.
