Ion Alexe (born July 25, 1946 in Cornu, Prahova ) is a former Romanian boxer . Alexe was an Olympic participant in 1968 , European champion 1969 , silver medalist at the 1972 Olympic Games and bronze medalist at the 1973 European Championships .

Career

Ion Alexe was Romanian heavyweight champion (+81 kg) from 1967-1971 and 1973.

In 1968 Alexe first took part in the Olympic Games , in which he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against George Foreman , USA (TKO 3rd). At the European Championships in 1969 Alexe won the semifinals over Peter Hussing , Germany , and in the final over Kiril Pandov, Bulgaria .

At the 1972 Olympic Games , Alexe reached the final after victories over Jozsef Reder, Hungary (5: 0), Jürgen Fanghänel , GDR (5: 0), and Hasse Thomsén , Sweden (5: 0), the final, which he beat Teófilo Stevenson , Cuba , should contest, but could no longer compete due to an injury. He won the Olympic silver medal.

In 1973 Alexe won the bronze medal at the European Championships in 1973 and ended his career a few years later.
