Luan Krasniqi (born May 10, 1971 in Junik , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former German boxer. In 1987 he came to his family in Germany and has lived in Rottweil and Hamburg since the beginning of his professional career .

Amateur time

Krasniqi was an amateur in the 91 kg class (heavyweight) and won the German championship title in 1994 and the 23rd chemistry cup in 1995. One of his first appearances for the German national relay was in an international match against England in 1994.

At the 1995 World Cup in Berlin , he defeated the eventual Olympic champion Wladimir Klitschko , Ukraine (6: 2) in the quarter-finals , and Sinan Samil Sam , Turkey (7: 3) in the semifinals , but lost to Félix Savón , Cuba (RSC 2nd) in the final battle. . At the World Military Championships in Rome that same year , he narrowly lost in the final to Wladimir Klitschko, Ukraine (+2: 2).

In 1996 Krasniqi won the silver medal at the 24th Chemistry Cup , losing to Savón in the final (AB 3rd); in Vejle he won the European title with a final victory over Christophe Mendy, France (8: 7). At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta ( USA ) he reached the semi-finals after victories over Ruslan Chagayev , Uzbekistan (12: 4), in the round of 16 over Igor Kshinin, Russia (10: 2), and in the quarter-finals over Sergey Dychkov, Belarus . His opponent should be there again Savón, but he could not compete in this fight due to a hand injury. Krasniqi finished the tournament with an Olympic bronze medal.

Professional career

In 1997, Luan Krasniqi began his professional career. In 2002 he won the European heavyweight title with a narrow point win over the German southpaw René Monse .

However, Krasniqi surprisingly lost the title in his first defense in July 2002 to Poland's Przemysław Saleta . He gave up the fight after the eighth round, although he had led clearly on points by then. His inexplicable refusal to continue boxing subsequently earned him massive criticism and ridicule. The Universum head coach Fritz Sdunek then recommended that he reconsider the continuation of his career. He later justified his abandonment of the fight with the fact that he was poorly trained and threatened him with a knockout defeat.

He then switched from coach Michael Timm to Torsten Schmitz . After two construction wins, there was a rematch against Przemysław Saleta. It was not a title fight, however, as Saleta had lost the European title to Sinan Şamil Sam in their first title defense. In the first round, Przemysław Saleta had to go down 3 times. Krasniqi won the rematch by TKO in round 1. On February 14, 2004, after winning points against Sinan Şamil Sam, whom he had defeated twice as an amateur, again European champion. He defended the title with an early victory over Monse and a draw against Timo Hoffmann until 2004 and then resigned it as this was a prerequisite for a fight for the WBO world championship title .

By knocking out a knockout match against Lance Whitaker in May 2005, he became a mandatory challenger to WBO world champion Lamon Brewster .

For marketing reasons, the date chosen for this title fight was September 28, 2005, the 100th birthday of Max Schmeling . Krasniqi thus had the opportunity to come second after Schmeling to bring a world heavyweight title to Germany . Krasniqi made a good impression on critics and spectators and was in the lead on all three point slips before falling to the ground with a left hook in the eighth round. Krasniqi should have been counted after this fall, but was controversially kept in the fight by the referee's delayed counting. However, in the ninth round Brewster managed another knockdown, after which Krasniqi finally gave up the fight. While he recovered very quickly and smilingly congratulated Brewster on his victory, the latter had to struggle more and more with the consequences of the hits, had to be supported and finally carried into the dressing room.

In the period that followed, Krasniqi won two points against David Bostice and Brian Minto . These successes, which were planned as development struggles after the defeat against Brewster, were hard-won and already indicated a decline in performance. Nevertheless, his promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl then enabled him to participate again in an elimination match against Tony Thompson in order to qualify again for a WBO title fight.

On July 14, 2007 in the Color Line Arena in Hamburg , Luan Krasniqi lost to Thompson after being canceled by the US referee Mark Nelson in the fifth round due to technical knockout. After Krasniqi from Thompson constantly attacked the Pushing ropes and enduring numerous flurry of blows without recognizable resistance, the referee had already asked him in the ring break between the fourth and fifth round to end his passivity in the ring and defend himself. When he showed no will to fight in the fifth round, the referee finally broke off the unequal fight. After the fight, Krasniqi explained his disastrous performance by saying that he simply couldn't get into the fight and that the opponent didn't suit him. He was also hampered by a painful rib injury from Thompson's blow in the second round from then on.

On November 15, 2008, Krasniqi lost in Düsseldorf against his stable colleague Alexander Dimitrenko , who had not been defeated until then and with whom he had already completed sparring rounds in the past, by knockout ( liver hook ) in the third round. This WBO intercontinental championship fight should serve as a qualification for a new world championship fight, which however moved into the distance after this defeat. The rematch against Alexander Dimitrenko, which was scheduled for November 28, 2009 in Oberhausen, was postponed indefinitely due to a torn ligament in Krasniqi's right foot that he suffered during training.

On February 26, 2011, Krasniqi planned his comeback fight against Johnathon Banks from the USA. However, this fight was canceled by Krasniqi due to a serious virus infection. Krasniqi suffered from suppuration of the paranasal sinuses and sinuses a week before the fight. If he had won, Krasniqi would have had the prospect of a challenge from one of the Klitschko brothers.

On December 29, 2011, Krasniqi announced his retirement from active boxing on his website and in a press release.

social commitment

Luan Krasniqi has been committed to the SOS Children's Villages organization worldwide since 2006 . As part of the “ 6 Villages for 2006 ” World Cup campaign , he and other well-known German athletes worked to ensure that six new SOS Children's Villages could be built. In 2013 Luan Krasniqi and Uwe Hück started the benefit boxing match “Blue spots for good causes”. The result: a spectacular fight in the MHP Arena in Ludwigsburg, which Krasniqi won. The donations - 100,000 euros - were divided between the Hück Learning Foundation and the SOS Children's Villages (especially for projects in Kosovo). In 2015 the second boxing event followed, in which boxers Francois Botha and Danny Williams also took part.

Krasniqi sums up why he supports the SOS Children's Villages as follows: "I actually grew up very well, I know how important it is to have a family. What SOS does, namely giving children a family, is unique."
