Lamon Brewster (born June 5, 1973 in Indianapolis , Indiana , USA ) is a former American heavyweight boxer and WBO world champion.
amateur
In 1991, when he was eighteen, he moved to Los Angeles to make a name for himself. In 1992 and 1993 he won the Golden Gloves amateur tournament in California and was able to prevail in the 1995 national championship. In the same year he was runner-up at the Pan American Games , losing to Félix Savón in the final . After he failed in the qualifying tournament for the 1996 Olympic Games , he turned professional.
Professional career
In November 1996 he began his professional career with promoter Bob Arum with a knockout win in the first round. He showed good clout and taker skills, but he lacked agility and the ability to put the usually larger opponents under pressure, to cut them off and force them to trade.
The surprising loss to Clifford Etienne in May 2000, considered by many to be the fight of the year, was initially explained by Etienne's good performance and an injury. Brewster had torn the ligaments in his knee, but the fight continued for some time. Six months later, his second loss to Charles Shufford followed . This then got a title fight against Wladimir Klitschko; Shufford clearly lost every round and was knocked out in the sixth round.
Win the WBO title
Despite these setbacks, a solution was found for Brewster to still get to great fights. He changed promoters and signed with Don King . He was quickly named by the WBO as one of the challengers for the association's vacant heavyweight title, which Corrie Sanders had resigned after his victory over Wladimir Klitschko , which was a prerequisite for Sanders to box against Vitali Klitschko for the WBC title.
On April 10, 2004, Brewster surprisingly won the vacant WBO world title with a technical knockout in the fifth round against Wladimir Klitschko. Klitschko clearly dominated the fight at the beginning, and he managed the only knockdown in Brewster's career in the fourth round. Then, however, Klitschko had to pay tribute to his high starting pace. Aided by Klitschko's sudden drop in stamina, Brewster scored several serious hits, which initially led to a counting while standing and finally to the fight being stopped. The victory was initially hardly rewarded, as it was attributed to Klitschko's poor ability to take. Rumors were also spread regarding a manipulation of Klitschko's fitness on the evening of the fight.
Title defenses
After a narrow and unconvincing point win against Kali Meehan , he boxed on May 21, 2005 in his second defense against the veteran Andrzej Gołota . Gołota was considered a good taker and was a respected boxer who, in the opinion of many experts, had wrongly not been declared the winner in two world championship fights for the IBF title against Chris Byrd and the WBA title against John Ruiz in 2004 . Brewster was able to regain his reputation in the fight against Gołota by surprisingly knocking out his opponent in just 53 seconds.
On September 28, 2005, he fought against the German-Albanian challenger Luan Krasniqi , who had risen to the mandatory challenger with a convincing knockout victory in the sixth round over Lance Whitaker in an elimination match of the WBO. After Brewster took a lot of tough hits and was behind all three judges by the seventh round, he managed a heavy knockdown in the eighth round. Krasniqi was not ready to fight again in the prescribed ten seconds, but was kept in the fight by the referee's delayed counting. In the ninth lap, Brewster managed to knock down again; Krasniqi finally gave up the fight. Although TKO winner, Brewster was badly marked after the fight in contrast to the quickly recovered opponent, could only struggle to stand on his feet and finally had to be carried into the dressing room. The referee behavior caused irritation. Brewster's management later assumed bribery and announced that they no longer wanted to fight in Germany.
Loss of WBO title
In March 2006, the contract with challenger Sjarhej Lyachowitsch from Belarus (balance 22-1) was signed for a voluntary title defense. The fight took place on April 1, 2006. Before the fight, Brewster had moved from trainer Jesse Reid, who had coached him for two fights, to the highly acclaimed Buddy McGirt and had separated from his long-time manager Sam Simon, the producer of the television series The Simpsons .
Lyachowitsch started the fight very disciplined and kept Brewster at a good distance. In the sixth round, the world champion ran into serious problems; As in the fight against Klitschko, he kept trying to knock him out, but stood and met Lyachowitsch on his part, who went into the break in the round. In the next round Brewster managed a knockdown; Lyachowitsch said he deliberately went to the ground in order to avoid the exchange of blows for a short time and to recover after a few effective hits. He then regained control of the fight. In the end Lyachowitsch was unanimously awarded a clear win on points. Several days later, Brewster underwent surgery for a retinal detachment in his left eye during the fight.
Brewster was no longer under contract with Don King since late 2006 , which eased the way for a second fight against Wladimir Klitschko. On July 7, 2007, Brewster returned to the ring after 15 months of inactivity and competed in Cologne for the rematch against Klitschko for the IBF world championship belt. In the revenge in front of 19,500 spectators in the Kölnarena , Klitschko dominated from the first round, as in the first encounter. Even a slight hairline crack in his left leading hand, which he suffered in the first lap, could not stop Klitschko. After one-sided six rounds in which Klitschko could land 199 and Brewster 77 hits, Brewster's coach McGirt gave up the fight prematurely. Klitschko won the fight mainly through the frequent and consistent use of the leading hand.
After this second defeat in a row, Brewster remained inactive again for more than a year before he reported back in August 2008 with a knockout victory against build-up opponent Danny Batchelder. This was his first win in three years. A fight against ex-WBA world champion Bruce Seldon planned for November 2008 had to be canceled due to Brewster's flu.
From March 2009 Brewster was under contract at the German boxing promotion Sauerland Event . He completed his first fight for his new management on March 13, 2009 in Kiel against the British Michael Sprott . He won this fight unanimously on points. Nevertheless, Brewster's career seemed to be coming to an end: After he surprisingly lost on points to Nigerian Gbenga Oluokun in August 2009 , he was also defeated by young heavyweight Robert Helenius in the eighth round in January 2010 due to a technical knockout. As a result of this fight he went blind on the left eye, which had been damaged by the Lyachowitsch fight. Because his eyesight could not be restored even after four unsuccessful operations, Brewster announced the end of his career in January 2011.
