Robert Gabriel Helenius (born January 2, 1984 in Stockholm , Sweden ) is a Finnish professional boxer .
Amateur career
Robert Helenius grew up in Porvoo, southern Finland , and started boxing at the age of 14 at the local club Porvoon Nyrkkeilyseura . He was trained by his father Karl Helenius and started his amateur career in 1998. Helenius was Finnish super heavyweight champion three times in a row from 2003 to 2005, and in 2001 he finished second.
His first international success was the third place in 2000 at the European Championships for the Cadet Age Group (U-17) in Patras , where he failed in the semi-finals against Croatian Mario Preskar. The following year he reached the semi-finals again at the Junior European Championships in Sarajevo , but lost to his opponent Islam Timursijew from Russia prematurely. In 2002 he took part in the Junior World Championships in Santiago de Cuba , but failed in the first round of the tournament.
At the 2005 World Cup in Mianyang, China, he lost again prematurely in the round of 16 against the Uzbek Rustam Saidov , bronze medalist at the Olympic Games in Sydney . At the 2006 European Championships in Plovdiv , he made a name for himself when he was able to beat all opponents prematurely on the way to the final and only then lost to Islam Timursiev on points in the final battle. Since December 2006 he fought in the German boxing Bundesliga for the boxing department of Hertha BSC , the Sauerland boxing stable had secured the option of a possible professional contract after the 2008 Olympic Games .
Due to a training injury, however, he was unable to participate in the 2007 World Amateur Championships in Chicago , which were also a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games. When following the first European qualifying tournament in Italy Pescara he first succumbed to for Azerbaijan starting Russians David Arschba. Assba then reached the semi-finals without any problems and was considered the favorite to win the tournament, but was then disqualified by the AIBA as not eligible to start for Azerbaijan. Assbasa's place in the semifinals was then raffled among all boxers who had lost to him up until then and went to Helenius, who, however, could not use this opportunity and lost to the Croatian Marko Tomasović . In the second European qualifying tournament in Athens he also missed the last chance to participate in the games in Beijing when he was defeated by Jaroslawas Jaksto from Lithuania .
Professional career
After failing in the Olympic qualification, Helenius became a professional at Wilfried Sauerland's boxing stable in Berlin . Since his professional debut he has been trained by Ulli Wegner . Helenius won his first professional fight on May 17th, 2008 in Bayreuth against the German Gene Pukall (14-11) with a technical knockout in the first round. In 2009 he was able to defeat the former English champions Scott Gammer and the Ukrainian Taras Bidenko prematurely.
His first major success as a professional, he posted in January 2010 by defeating ex-WBO title holder Lamon Brewster . He scored a knockdown in the second round; this was only the second time in Brewster's career that he had gone down. The fight ended with a technical knockout in the eighth round and ended Brewsters' comeback attempt, which subsequently ended his career. After a points win in March 2010 over Nigerian Olympian Gbenga Oluokun , Helenius won the fight against Gregory Tony on August 21, 2010 for the vacant EBU- EU heavyweight title. Helenius defeated the French by a technical knockout in the sixth round after he brought Tony down a total of four times. He defended the EU title in November 2010 against Attila Levin from Sweden with a technical knockout in the second round.
In 2011 Helenius defeated the Nigerian Samuel Peter and the Belarusian Sjarhej Lyachowitsch , both former short-term world champions of the associations WBC and WBO, each prematurely by knockout in the ninth round. He was then nominated for a fight for the European Championship, as an opponent Dereck Chisora from Great Britain was determined. The fight was hosted by Sauerland Event on December 4, 2011 in Helsinki and ended after twelve rounds with a split score (2 × 115-113 for Helenius, 1 × 115-113 for Chisora) in favor of Helenius, who was in a controversial decision of European title was awarded.
After almost a year off due to a ligament injury, he defeated Sherman Williams on November 10, 2012 on points (99-91, 99-93, 98-93). In March 2013 he also won unanimously (98-93, 97-93, 98-93) against Michael Sprott . After another almost two-year injury break, he met the Hungarian Andras Csomor on March 22, 2015 in the Tondiraba Ice Hall, whom Helenius won early by knockout in the first round. On June 13, 2015 he met the Georgian Beqa Lobjanidze in Vaasa Areena , whom Helenius won by knockout in the third round.
