Samuel Okon Peter (born September 6, 1980 in Akwa Ibom , Nigeria ), often abbreviated to Sam Peter , is a Nigerian heavyweight boxer and former WBC world champion.
amateur
Peter had a brief amateur career with 18 wins and two losses; among other things, he defeated Muchtarchan Dildabekow . In 2000 he won in Cairo the African qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games in Sydney . There he beat the Romanian Konstantin Onofrei, but then lost in the quarterfinals to Paolo Vidoz on points.
Professional career
Samuel Peter turned pro in the USA in 2001 , lives and trains in Las Vegas . His manager is the Bulgarian Iwailo Gotsew, he was promoted by Duva Boxing and Don King .
Peter is slow to move, very slow and technically very limited. Because of this, he couldn't put some opponents right and had to go the full distance with Jovo Pudar and Charles Shufford, for example , although he also won these fights safely. Jeremy Williams was hard knocked out, and Yanqui Díaz ( Juan Carlos Gómez's only conqueror until his fight against Vitali Klitschko ) he was able to defeat prematurely. Further technical deficiencies in boxing were revealed against higher-class opponents, for example he is occasionally prone to illegal neck blows.
On September 24, 2005 he was defeated by Wladimir Klitschko in a World Cup elimination match between the WBO and IBF associations . Klitschko had to hit the ground several times in this fight: two knockdowns in the fifth round, which were initiated by irregular blows to the neck, and a third knockdown in the tenth round. Despite this defeat, Peter continued to be seen as one of the few hopefuls in the heavyweight division, he remained in the top 10 in " Ring Magazine ". After a points win over Robert Hawkins and first round knockout against Julius Long (balance 14-7) Peter went on September 2, 2006 in an elimination match of the WBC Association against James Toney . Toney was 38 years old at the time and was well past his zenith. He won a controversial 2-1 judge's verdict. Due to the controversial ruling, the WBC ordered a direct rematch between Peter and Toney. Samuel Peter won this again on January 6, 2007, this time clearly and unanimously. He had Toney down in the second round and got good reviews. With this victory he acquired the right to box for the WBC World Championship.
Peter should now box against the WBC title holder Oleg Maskayev . However, since the ex-world champion Vitali Klitschko , who had resigned due to injury in 2005, had announced his return and wanted to assert his right to an immediate title fight, the fight could not take place at first. After lengthy negotiations it was finally agreed that Maskayev should first play against Peter and that the winner of this fight should then defend the title against Klitschko. The fight against Maskayev was scheduled for October 6, 2007 in New York's Madison Square Garden . The Russian had to cancel the fight because of a herniated disc during preparation , whereupon Peter was declared an interim title holder by the WBC. If Maskayev had not been able to defend his title against Peter within a year, he would have been stripped of his title and Peter would have become WBC world champion without a fight. On October 6, Peter boxed for the interim title against Jameel McCline . Surprisingly, he had to accept heavy impact hits at the beginning of the fight and went down once in the second round and twice in the third round; However, he was able to recover and more or less dominate the fight in the following years. However, he could not live up to his role as the clear favorite. In the end, he was awarded a narrow point win.
On March 8, 2008, the duel with the 39-year-old WBC world champion Oleg Maskajew, who had long since passed his prime, finally took place in Cancun, Mexico . After a quiet start, Peter landed several heavy impact hits shortly before the end of the sixth lap. The fight was stopped because Maskayev seemed unable to fight, but without going down. This success made Peter WBC heavyweight world champion. According to the contract, he then had to play against the Ukrainian Vitali Klitschko on October 11, 2008 in Berlin . After a one-sided course of the fight, in which Peter lost every round, he gave up the fight after the eighth round and thus lost the WBC title in his first title defense. He played his first fight after losing the title in March 2009 against the American Eddie Chambers . Peter, who started this duel with the highest weight of his professional career (more than 120 kg), lost the fight over twelve rounds on points and suffered his second defeat in a row.
He then fought his way back up in the IBF rankings with four wins; Among other things, he won an elimination match of the IBF Association against Nagy Aguilera, who had previously defeated Oleg Maskayev. After the compulsory defense of IBF / WBO world champion Wladimir Klitschko against Alexander Powetkin on September 11, 2010 in the Commerzbank-Arena in Frankfurt due to non-compliance with deadlines on the part of the Russian professional boxer, Samuel Peter received the IBF boxer placed second -World ranking against Klitschko more than five years after their first encounter the chance for a rematch. But he also lost this fight; after many heavy hits in the course of the fight, Peter went down in the tenth round, whereupon the fight was stopped by the referee. Peter lost the next fight on April 2, 2011 against the undefeated aspiring Finn Robert Helenius by knockout in the ninth round.
Afterwards, Peter did not start again until September 27, 2014. He won against the American Ron Aubrey by a technical knockout in the second round.
