Fisherman's Wharf
Fisherman's Wharf is a port district in northeast San Francisco in the US state of California . It extends along the north coast from Van Ness Avenue in the west to Kearny Street in the east.
Fisherman's Wharf is one of the top tourist attractions in San Francisco, as many of the most popular attractions are located there. For example Pier 39 or The Cannery , an old Del Monte canning factory . Also represented there are a wax museum and Ghirardelli Square , an old chocolate factory, and Ripley's Believe It or Not! , an exhibition of curiosities. The two museum ships USS Pampanito and Jeremiah O'Brien are anchored at Pier 45 .
The harbor district is characterized by restaurants that are known for their fish and seafood specialties. There are also many shops, galleries and museums here. The ferries to Alcatraz also depart from Fisherman's Wharf . Other popular destinations such as Chinatown , the cable car turn-around at the end of the Powell-Hyde Line, the Maritime National Historical Park or Lombard Street are in the immediate vicinity.
Fisherman's Wharf was created around 1900 by the settlement of Italian fishermen . Since the 1950s , the district has developed into a tourist area of San Francisco, which now has more visitors than the Golden Gate Bridge or Chinatown . Many large hotels are therefore located on the edge of Fisherman's Wharf. In the summer, many open-air events are held on the streets, as well as flea markets and live concerts.
On May 23, 2020, a fire broke out on Pier 45, partially destroying a large fish warehouse.
