Mission District
The Mission District (also: The Mission ) is a district of San Francisco . The district got its name from the Mission San Francisco de Asís , one of the oldest buildings in San Francisco, which is located in the northwest of the Mission District.
The Mission District is known for its diverse art and music scene, as well as for its cuisine, which is mainly influenced by Mexican immigrants.
The quarter, traditionally inhabited by immigrants, came under increasing gentrification pressure at the beginning of the 21st century , after the price of land and rents rose rapidly due to the influx of young dot-com employees.
Geographical location
The Mission District, which consists of the two districts Mission Dolores and Inner Mission , is bordered by the South of Market and Hayes Valley districts to the north, Duboce Triangle , Eureka Valley and Noe Valley to the west, Bernal Heights to the south and the districts to the east Bayview and Protrero Hill framed. Mission Street runs from north to south as the main artery through the district, while it is bounded by US Highway 101 to the east.
Due to its geographic location, the Mission District has a warmer and sunnier climate than other parts of San Francisco. This location protects the mission from the fog and wind that shape the microclimate of other parts of San Francisco when coming from the Pacific .
Residents
The Mission District is a traditionally immigrant neighborhood of San Francisco. In the early 20th century, workers primarily from Germany and Ireland settled here , who were later joined by immigrants from other parts of Europe . Since the 1940s, the mission has been increasingly dominated by immigrants from Mexico . In the 1980s and 1990s, immigrants came from the Middle East and South America . As part of the dot-com boom , more and more financially strong yuppies settled in the Mission District, which has led to tensions with the traditional residents of the district due to the rapidly increasing rents and the associated gentrification .
Others
The Mission District is part of many film sets. For example, the film La Mission takes place in the Mission and provides insights into the life there of the people with a Latin American background.
