The district extends in the west to Powell Street and Nob Hill , in the east to Kearny Street , in the north to North Beach . The Dragon Gate is the official entrance to this 24-block district with its Chinese architecture . More Cantonese and Mandarin are spoken here than any other language. The partly illegal immigrants from Asia try to preserve their original identity through the food and the kitchen. San Francisco is therefore also known for its many Cantonese restaurants.

history

The district was founded in the 1850s. It was completely destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake . The city administration's plans to build Chinatown further south failed due to resistance from the Chinese.
