South of Market (also known as SoMa for short ) is a district in San Francisco . This area got its name because it extends south of Market Street .

The district was built on the so-called " landfills ". Originally there was a bay here. In the 19th century ships anchored here. During the gold rush , hundreds of smaller and larger ships were abandoned by their crew. Little by little, the bay was filled with rubble in order to gain new space for the rapidly growing city.

South of Market initially consisted of warehouses, port and industrial facilities. The redevelopment of this area began in the late 1970s to early 1980s with the construction of the Moscone North Convention Center . In the 1990s, the renovation began and shopping opportunities, museums such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and chic lofts were created . During this time, the so-called dot - com companies also preferred to settle here, as cheaper and trendy office space was available. SoMa-based companies include CNET , Dropbox , Twitter , Airbnb , Uber , Zynga , Sega of America , Wired , TechCrunch, and Yelp .
