The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art ( SFMOMA ) is a modern art museum in San Francisco .

history

When the museum opened in 1935 under founding director Grace L. McCann Morley (1900–1985), it was the only museum on the west coast of the USA that was exclusively dedicated to the art of the 20th century.

In January 1995 the SFMOMA moved into a new building in the district south of Market Street (South of Market / SOMA), which was designed by the Swiss architect Mario Botta . From June 2013, the museum was closed for renovation work and the construction of an extension designed by the Snøhetta architectural office . In the meantime, exhibitions have taken place in various locations in the Bay Area .

It reopened in May 2016 and now, at 16,000 square meters, has forty percent more exhibition space than the New York Museum of Modern Art . In the new building, the collection of the founder of GAP Inc. , Donald G. Fisher and his wife, is shown.
