Donald G. Fisher
Donald George Fisher (born September 3, 1928 in San Francisco , California , † September 27, 2009 ) was an American entrepreneur. Among other things, he co-founded the fashion company Gap Inc. with his wife .
Life
Fisher grew up in a Jewish family in California. From 1946 to 1951, he studied business administration at the University of California, Berkeley . He was an active athlete in the university teams in swimming and water polo. He also belonged to the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity .
In 1969, Fisher and his wife Doris founded the fashion company Gap Inc., which rose to become the largest US clothing retailer.
Charity
Fisher was a well-known collector of contemporary works of art, including by Andy Warhol , Alexander Calder , Roy Lichtenstein , Ellsworth Kelly , Gerhard Richter , Anselm Kiefer , Chuck Close and Claes Oldenburg . The Fisher couple's plans to exhibit the collection in the National Park of the Presidio near the Golden Gate Bridge failed in 2009. Alternatively, the couple concluded an agreement with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art on exhibition options, which would include the extension that opened in 2016 of the museum was realized.
Fisher was also involved in the Edison Schools educational program .
