Tenderloin is a residential and business district in downtown San Francisco with an extensive nightlife. It is made up of a mixed and artistic population. Tenderloin is characterized by poverty, homelessness and crime. The neighborhood is known for its immigrants, hour hotels, ethnic eateries, bars and clubs, and the alternative art scene. It is adjacent to Union Square , the Financial District, and the Civic Center .

The name is derived from a neighborhood of the same name in the New York borough of Manhattan , which is also of bad repute, although the exact references are unclear.
