North Beach is a neighborhood in San Francisco . This district, shaped by Italian immigrants, is located in the northeast on the bay between Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf . A hill in the Russian Hill neighborhood keeps clouds coming from the Pacific , so North Beach has more sunny days than the rest of the city. Mainly because of the many Italian restaurants and cafes, this district is popular with the residents of San Francisco. The Washington Square with St. Peter and Paul Church is located in the heart of North Beach.

The Beat Generation literary movement emerged in North Beach in the 1950s . Authors such as Jack Kerouac , Dylan Thomas and Neal Cassady frequented the Vesuvio Café there .
