Zynga headquarters in San Francisco

Zynga is an American company that operates browser games , some of which can only be played within social networks such as Facebook and Myspace . The most famous games are FarmVille , Mafia Wars , and CityVille . The 50 games are played by around 126 million users (as of April 2014), compared to more than 215 million in March 2011. The company generates income, among other things, from the sale of virtual currencies , which can be used within the game for virtual goods or for faster progress.

Company history

Zynga was founded in January 2007 by Mark Pincus . The company employs over 1,300 people and had 2010 sales of $ 850 million.

On October 31, 2009, Zynga was accused by blogger Michael Arrington ( TechCrunch ) of generating a third of its revenue from subscription traps .

In 2009 and 2010, Zynga received approximately half a billion US dollars in venture capital from various investors. In December 2009, a consortium led by the Russian investment firm Digital Sky Technologies , which had previously acquired Facebook shares worth $ 200 million, took over Zynga shares worth $ 180 million. In June 2010, Google invested between $ 100 million and $ 200 million in the company. In June 2010, Zynga finally received additional 13.5 billion yen (US $ 147 million) from the Japanese Softbank Corp . On December 16, 2011, Zynga went public. At the end of 2011, Zynga had a market value of $ 8.9 billion.

In May 2010, the company signed an agreement with the Internet portal provider Yahoo , which will integrate Zynga's games on its website and in its services.

In February 2011 it was announced that Zynga was talking to investors about a capital increase of $ 250 million. The net present value of the company would then be seven to nine billion US dollars if the financing round goes as planned.

In June 2011, Zynga opened a new “operations center” in the Irish capital Dublin , which is to be expanded into Zyngas’s largest European branch.

According to the company, in January 2010, users of Zynga games donated $ 1.5 million to the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Zynga's most successful game to date is CityVille . The game, published on Facebook in December 2010, was played by over 100 million players the following month (as of January 17, 2011).

In October 2012, it was announced that financial difficulties caused Zynga to lay off five percent of its employees and close three locations, including the Boston office .

On June 4, 2013 it was announced that Zynga had laid off another 520 of its 2,800 employees. This corresponds to 18% of the entire workforce. In addition, several locations are to be closed. The reason for the cuts is the increased transition from players to smartphones and tablets, which Zynga is said to have missed. For the same reason, Don Mattrick had to resign as CEO in April 2015, according to media reports. Company founder Mark Pincus took his place again.

In June 2020, Zynga bought the Turkish game developer Peak Games for $ 1.8 billion.
